  • Creates the voltage necessary to activate the spark plugs
  • For direct (coil-on-plug) ignition systems
  • Replace when damaged or worn

The engine in your Nissan depends on the Direct Ignition Coils to start. Spark plugs require thousands of volts to produce the correct spark, which is far more than the 12 volts your Nissan's battery produces. The ignition coils take the lower voltage from your battery, boost it, and forward it to the spark plugs. The spark plugs then have the power needed to start your vehicle. Without functioning Direct Ignition Coils, you can't operate your Nissan.

There are different types of ignition systems. A direct ignition, or coil-on-plug ignition, has the ignition coils positioned on top of the spark plugs. In the majority of modern vehicles, there is one Direct Ignition Coil for every spark plug, but some pair one coil with two spark plugs. Your engine size influences the number of spark plugs and Direct Ignition Coils your Nissan has. You can find information about your engine size in your owner's manual.

A Direct Ignition Coil generally has a lifespan of 100,000 miles, but this can vary depending on your driving habits and vehicle. If your spark plugs are in need of a replacement, it can strain your ignition coils and cause them to wear out quicker. When a Direct Ignition Coil is damaged or stops working right, you can't fix it and will need a new one. You could have a bad Direct Ignition Coil if your check engine light is on, your car backfires, your engine stalls, or your car won't start.

With the correct tools and know-how, you can replace a Nissan Direct Ignition Coil by yourself. Still, you can always bring your car to the nearest service center to have a trained technician carry out the replacement.

Your Nissan won't start without working Direct Ignition Coils. When one of your coils stops working, you'll want to make sure you get the right replacement part. Shop genuine OEM parts to find the correct fit for your vehicle.
