Bring Your Key Back to Life: How to Replace the Battery in Your INFINITI Key Fob

Are you trying to use your INFINITI key fob, but you get no response? Or does the fob work with a reduced operating range? If so, it might be time to install a new INFINITI key battery. Luckily, this is a straightforward process you can do at home.

Read on to learn how to replace the battery in the INFINITI key fob and some tips to help prolong its lifespan.

Signs Your INFINITI Key Fob Battery Is Low

If you try to use the lock/unlock or remote start buttons on your INFINITI key fob but nothing happens, the battery inside the key fob is likely dead or too low. Likewise, if you have an INFINITI Intelligent Key fob, approaching the door and touching the unlock sensor/door request switch wont give you a response if the battery is dead.

However, the INFINITI Intelligent Key might not unlock/lock the doors if you hold the fob too close to the door handle sensor, even if the battery is full. For example, if you hold the Intelligent Key in the palm of the same hand you use to push the door handle request switch, it may be considered too close. When the distance between the Intelligent Key and the door handle is too short, the Intelligent Key system will have difficulty recognizing that the fob is outside the vehicle.

What Battery Does an INFINITI Key Fob Use

Depending on your key type, your fob will likely require the following batteries. Always double-check your owner’s manual to ensure you have the right match.

  • The standard INFINITI key fob requires a CR2025 battery.
  • The INFINITI Intelligent Key fob requires a CR2032 battery.

How to Change Battery in INFINITI Key Fob

Follow these INFINITI key fob battery replacement steps for both a standard key and an Intelligent Key.

  1. Locate and press the release tab on the back of your key fob to detach the metal car key.
  2. Slide out the metal key as you hold the release tab.
  3. Observe the face of the key fob from where you pulled the metal key. Locate two small slots in the line that separates the key fob into two parts.
  4. Take a flathead screwdriver and apply some tape on its tip or wrap it into a thin cloth to help prevent scratching your key fob.
  5. Insert the screwdriver into one of the two small slots you located previously.
  6. Twist the screwdriver to pry open the key fob.
  7. If necessary, move the screwdriver along the separation line to pry open the fob into two parts.
  8. Remove the old battery and insert the new battery with the positive side facing down.
  9. Snap the two key fob panels back in place and reinsert the metal key you removed earlier.
  10. Test if your INFINITI key fob works correctly.
If your key fob continues to malfunction after the battery replacement, you might need a new one. Shop genuine INFINITI electrical system parts for a fob designed to work seamlessly with your INFINITI.

Tips for a Longer Key Fob Battery Life

While your Intelligent Key system helps make the driving experience more elegant, it requires a healthy battery in the key fob. Here are some tips and tricks to help you get more out of your key battery life.

  • Keep the fob away from strong radio waves. The intelligent key continuously receives radio waves to provide a seamless door and trunk locking/unlocking experience and to help make it easy to start your car with a push of a button. But, leaving the key fob near equipment that transmits strong radio waves, like TVs and personal computers, may shorten the battery life. So, you might be able to get more out of your battery if you keep the key fob away from strong radio wave sources.
  • Avoid high temps.Heat can impact battery life. Keep the key fob away from direct sunlight and other high-temperature sources.
  • Avoid extreme cold. Operating the key below 14°F (-10°C) can also negatively impact the battery and cause it to malfunction.

How to Unlock and Start Your INFINITI If Your Key Fob Battery Is Dead

You can still access your INFINITI and start the engine even if your Intelligent Key fob battery is entirely dead. For most models, all you need to do is use your metal key to unlock the door and follow these steps to start the engine.

  1. Move the shifter to the P (Park) position.
  2. Firmly apply the foot brake.
  3. Touch the ignition switch with the Intelligent Key. You will hear a chime sound.
  4. Push the ignition switch while depressing the brake pedal within 10 seconds after the chime sound.
  5. The engine will start if everything else works properly.
  6. You can find more details in your INFINITI instruction manual on operating your vehicle if the key fob battery runs out.
