Help! My Car Window Wont Open/Close

Maybe its a hot summer day, but your window wont roll down to let in fresh air. Or perhaps, the temperature is dropping, but you cant get your window up to keep out the cold.

When your car windows stop working the way they should, comfort isnt the only thing that becomes affected. Your vehicle is also at potential risk for theft and element exposure. If your car window wont open or close, you want the issue resolved as quickly as possible. Here are a few common causes for inoperable car windows, and what you can do to fix them.

Why is My Car Window Stuck Closed or Open?

Your car windows are surprisingly intricate and something you might take for granted until they stop working correctly. Issues can range from quick fixes like engaged child safety locks to complex concerns like damaged window regulators. Try troubleshooting the issue with the following tips.

1. Engaged Child Safety Lock

If your car window will not go up or down, an engaged safety lock may be to blame. This lock, which is meant to prevent smaller passengers from operating the window, could have been accidentally switched on or forgotten.

Once you verify that the lock is disengaged, inspect your windows to see if theyve started working. If not, check this off your list of potential culprits.

2. Blocked Window Slot

If your car window is stuck closed or open, ice, snow, or other debris may be clogged inside the window slot. This clogging can prevent the glass from moving up or down. If you suspect that your window is experiencing a blockage, observe the areas around the glass to confirm.

Try to remove any debris manually with a small tool. Take special care not to damage the window frame, glass, or surrounding areas.

3. Car Battery or Wiring Problems

Before assuming there is a bigger issue with your windows, youll also want to inspect your vehicles other electrical components. Are the interior lights turning on? Is your dashboard illuminating? If not, the issue may not be specific to your power windows. Instead, you may be experiencing wiring or battery problems. Check to see if you have a bad battery. If your battery isnt working the way it should, it may be time for a new one.

4. Misaligned Window

Occasionally, car windows can go "off-track," or fail to properly follow the path theyre designed to take when rolling up or down. This misalignment can happen for several reasons, including loose or damaged internal tracks, missing or deteriorated stopper rubbers, and broken clips. All of which can cause a window to dislocate.

But how can you pinpoint a misaligned window? Here are a few telltale signs to look out for:

  • A window falling to one side when opening or closing, causing it to stick mid-way
  • A window that sinks entirely into the door
  • Hearing grinding noises when trying to engage your window

Experiencing misaligned windows? You will likely need to remove the door panel for further diagnosis. If youre not comfortable doing this yourself, have your vehicle inspected by a professional.

5. Open Fuses

If two or more of your windows are non-functional, chances are you have an open fuse. When you have an open fuse, the electrical controls that operate your car windows can stop working, keeping them from rolling up or down. Repairing this issue typically involves replacing the inoperative fuse. Keep in mind that if a fuse is open, there is likely an electrical fault causing high current flow that needs to be diagnosed.

How to Fix an Open Window Fuse

What youll need:

  • Your INFINITIs owners manual
  • Fuse puller
  • An OEM window fuse

What youll do:

  • Consult your owners manual to locate the fuse box. Locations vary by vehicle.
  • Locate the fuse that manages your windows. This information can often be found via a diagram on the fuse box. If the diagram is not present, consult your owners manual.
  • Extract the open fuse using the fuse puller.
  • Inspect the fuse to ensure that this is the issue. To confirm that your fuse is defective, look for damaged wiring or discoloration.
  • Replace the open fuse with the correct OEM version for your vehicle model.
  • Reinstall the fuse box, and inspect your windows to ensure the issue has been resolved.

Note: Never replace blown fuses with a higher amperage fuse. Doing so can present a fire hazard.

If you replace the fuse only for it to blow out again later, there may be a greater circuitry or window motor problem. In which case, consider having your vehicle inspected by an authorized technician.

6. Damaged Window Regulator

Your vehicles window regulator is a mechanical assembly embedded within your door panel. Its primary job is to open and close your vehicles windows when you press the up/down button or roll the crank. The window regulator consists of various components. A big enough issue with any of these parts could cause the regulator to stop working properly.

Signs that your regulator may be the culprit include:

  • Your windows jerk or move irregularly when going up and down
  • Your windows no longer function at all
  • Grinding noises whenever you engage the up/down button or turn the crank
  • Your windows move at a slower pace when raising or lowering

Much like a misaligned window, this issue can only be diagnosed by removing your vehicles door panel.
