Why Does My Car Horn Sound Weak?

1. YOUR HORN SWITCH ISN'T WORKING.
In order to trigger a "honking" sound, your car's horn relies on a pressure-sensitive electrical switch located inside the steering wheel. This switch is the first component in the chain of activating your horn and producing a sound. If your horn switch is broken or damaged, you may hear a weak horn sound, inconsistent sound levels, or you may not hear any sound at all.
2. YOUR HORN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.
The horn is the physical horn component that produces the sound you and other drivers hear. The horn is made up of a metal diaphragm and an electromagnet. When you supply electric current to the horn, the metal diaphragm vibrates and makes the "honking" sound you expect from your horn. Try pressing the horn from your steering wheel and listen closely. If the horn makes a clicking sound, this means current is reaching the horn, but the mechanism can no longer produce sound. If this is the case, it's time to swap it out for a genuine INFINITI replacement horn.
3. YOUR HORN FUSE IS BLOWN.
Much like your home has fuses that keep electrical currents running to specific rooms and locations, your INFINITI has a fuse that carries electrical current to your horn. If your horn fuse is blown, you likely won't hear any sound at all when pressing the horn.
4. YOUR HORN RELAY IS DEAD.
The horn relay component connects your horn switch to your horn fuse. Not all vehicles contain a relay — some send power directly from the horn switch to the fuse and horn. Similar to a blown fuse, you likely won't hear any noise at all coming from your horn (not even clicking) if a busted relay is your issue.
How to Fix a Weak Car Horn
To determine the root of your weak car horn sound or inoperative car horn, you'll need to test the components of your horn system. Start with the fuse and relay, then test the horn itself, then test the horn switch last. Here's how to test each component and help you determine what needs to be replaced in your INFINITI:
1. TEST THE FUSE.
To test your horn fuse, you'll need to get under the hood. First, locate your INFINITI's horn fuse. Use pliers to pull out the correct fuse and inspect it carefully. If you see a damaged, melted, or a broken wire inside the fuse, you'll need to replace it with a new fuse from INFINITI. However, the fuse can be bad even if there are no signs of visible damage. To ensure the fuse is not the issue, test it using a multimeter. Depending on the meter reading, you'll be able to tell whether or not your fuse is the issue.
2. TEST THE HORN RELAY.
If your INFINITI has a horn relay. To determine whether your horn relay is the issue, simply remove it and swap it for another identical relay (there should be other similar relays within your vehicle's relay box). If the horn works with a different relay in position, purchase a replacement horn relay directly from INFINITI to solve the problem.
3. TEST THE HORN.
Pop the hood and locate your horn. Using a multimeter, hold a probe to the horn and have another person press the horn from inside the car. If your multimeter shows a current flowing but you don't get any sound from the horn (or you get a weak one), you will likely need to have it replaced.
4. TEST THE HORN SWITCH.
One end of your horn switch is housed under the hood and the other is housed inside your steering wheel. If you've ruled out all other components as the root of your weak horn sound, it's time to consult the pros. Inspecting your horn switch requires disassembling the steering wheel. Unless you're an experienced car mechanic, you may unknowingly tamper with airbag components in your steering wheel — posing serious danger down the road.
What If My Car Alarm Horn Sounds Weak?
Your INFINITI horn used to give you a strong "honk" when you locked your vehicle. These days, it sounds a bit wimpy when you press the lock button.
