Your vehicle's engine depends on the Direct Ignition Coils to start. Spark plugs require thousands of volts to create the appropriate spark, which is considerably more than the 12 volts your vehicle's battery is able to produce. The ignition coils take the lower voltage from your battery, increase it, and transmit it to the spark plugs. The spark plugs then have the power needed to start your vehicle. Without functioning Direct Ignition Coils, you can't operate your Nissan.
There are different types of ignition systems. A coil-on-plug ignition, also know as a direct ignition, has the ignition coils positioned on top of the spark plugs. In the majority of modern vehicles, there is one Direct Ignition Coil for every spark plug, but some have one coil for every two spark plugs. A Direct Ignition Coil generally has a lifespan of 100,000 miles, but this can vary based on your vehicle and driving habits. If your spark plugs are overdue for a replacement, it can put more strain on your ignition coils and cause them to wear out faster. When a Direct Ignition Coil is broken or failing, it can't be repaired and you will need a new one. Some signs you have a bad Direct Ignition Coil include your engine stalls, your car backfires, your car won't start, or your check engine light is on.
With the right tools and knowledge, you can replace a Nissan Direct Ignition Coil on your own. Still, you can always take your vehicle to your local service center to have a trained technician take care of the replacement.
