Heated Oxygen Sensor.
Oxygen Sensor.

  • Monitors the air-to-fuel ratio within your engine
  • Can become worn over time or damaged by a fluid leak
  • Replacement by an INFINITI professional is recommended

Your INFINITI combustion system depends on numerous sensors and gauges to maintain the environment required for proper performance. One of these sensors is the O2 or Oxygen Sensor (Rear). At their inception, they were introduced to help control and curb emissions, and are now standard in most modern vehicles. Depending on your INFINITI model and year, your engine may have one or more sensors.

Your INFINITI's O2 sensors help gauge the air-to-fuel ratio in your engine, helping your engine's internal computer regulate the mixture depending on whether your engine is burning rich (too little oxygen) or burning lean (too much oxygen). Having the incorrect ratio of air-to-fuel can negatively impact the combustion system, leading to decreased gas mileage and more emissions. That's one reason why it's so important to get a genuine INFINITI Oxygen Sensor (Rear).

The Oxygen Sensor (Rear) produces electricity, and the voltage it renders depends on what's coming out of the exhaust system. In layman's terms, the voltage generated by the Oxygen Sensor (Rear) varies if the air-to-fuel ratio is off. When a variance in voltage is detected, your INFINITI's computer makes the necessary adjustments to keep it running as designed.

Your Oxygen Sensor (Rear) may require a replacement due to age and wear. In certain circumstances, your car may need a premature O2 sensor replacement if it's damaged due to leaks or other forms of contamination. Some potential signs that it's time for a replacement O2 sensor include: engine misfiring, noisy idling, decreased fuel efficiency, and an illuminated dashboard warning light.

Because most modern cars rely on more than one Oxygen Sensor (Rear) to moderate the combustion process, it can be hard for a DIY mechanic to diagnose and replace the right sensor on their own. Occasionally, the repair involves at a specialized scanner and inspecting the undercarriage by jacking up the vehicle. Accordingly, most INFINITI owners opt for getting O2 sensor replacement services from their local INFINITI experts.
