There are generally two types of windshield cracks: impact and non-impact.
Impact cracks are caused by external objects striking or impacting your windshield — and you’d be surprised to know what can crack a windshield! Debris like rocks, pebbles, and gravel are common suspects. But even a rock not much bigger than a few grains of sand can make a dent at highway speeds.
Non-impact cracks are commonly caused by things like extreme temperature changes, faulty installation, and stress or pressure.
No matter if you’re dealing with an impact or nonimpact crack, the best course of action for any windshield trauma is replacement with an OEM windshield.
Types of Impact Cracks
Star crack: A star crack is typically a small chip with cracks branching off in different directions. Star cracks have a clear central point, likely from the object that struck your windshield. Star cracks can often get worse, and the cracks can spread across the windshield and compromise its integrity. If left alone, a star crack can spread, and you will likely have to replace the windshield.
Half moon: Half moon cracks occur when an object hits your windshield and leaves a chip in the outer glass layer in an oval or half-moon shape. The chip can branch off into several long, large cracks that may likely get bigger if left alone. You’ll likely need to replace your windshield if large or long cracks form.
Bullseye: Like a half moon crack, a bullseye crack occurs when an object strikes your windshield and leaves a circular windshield crack in the outer layers of the glass. Like the other impact cracks, a bullseye crack can spread across your windshield, causing you to have to replace your windshield.
Chip crack (stone break): A chip crack, or stone break, is another common type of crack caused by something impacting your windshield. Chip cracks are small craters in the top outer layer of glass that are no bigger than a quarter and have a single impact point.
Types of Non-Impact Cracks
Stress cracks:A stress crack is a long crack across your windshield. Stress cracks can appear in the middle of your INFINITI’s windshield or start from the edge and work their way out. These cracks may be caused by extreme temperature changes (i.e., pouring hot water on an icy windshield) or pressure on the glass. Due to their size, stress cracks mean the windshield will likely need to be replaced.
Edge cracks: These cracks start on the edge of the windshield and work their way out across the windshield from a single point of origin. Edge cracks can occur if the windshield is not installed correctly or if there is too much pressure on one side of the glass. Considering its location, an edge crack can significantly compromise your INFINITI windshield’s integrity. It’s usually best to replace your windshield when this type of crack is present.
Combination break: A combination break means there are multiple types of cracks on your windshield. For instance, you may have a bullseye or star crack on the windshield’s center, an edge crack in the corner, and a 10-inch-long stress crack running between them. Too many cracks can affect the glass’s integrity, and you’ll need to replace the windshield.
What to Do When You Notice a Crack In Your Windshield
Whether it’s a small chip in the glass or a long break right in the middle, it’s best not to ignore a cracked windshield. Even smaller chips and cracks can get bigger over time from things like general wear and tear, ice buildup in the wintertime, or heavy storm damage.
